About the Institute

The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors Inc. is one of two bodies that monitors the conduct of professional Surveyors in New Zealand.  The other body is the Cadastral Surveyors Licensing Board that replaced the Survey Board of New Zealand in 2002.  The Institute is an incorporated society Until 2002 the Survey Board and the Institute were constituted under the Survey Act 1986.

The Institute is concerned with the professional and ethical conduct of Surveyors while the Licensing Board is primariliy concerned with maintaining a high standard of competence of Surveyors dealing with land boundary surveys.

Anyone wishing to, can contact the full-time National Manager Institute of Surveyors, Barry Davidson at nzis@surveyors.org.nz or phone 04 471 1774. He can advise whether a matter relates to the Institute or refer enquirers to the Board.

Most members of the Institute have a university degree e.g. Bachelor of Surveying from Otago University or equivalent qualification and also have some years of practical training before professional interviews with the Licensing Board or the Survey Board.  Although most Institute members at some stage passed the Board's registration examinations entitling them to carry out land title surveys, many work in other fields of surveying such as land development, civil engineering (particularly set-out work) within New Zealand and overseas.
