The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (Inc.)

Working as a surveyor in New Zealand, you are one of a group of highly educated and knowledgeable land professionals. Surveying is a profession that has been hugely active in New Zealand since the 1830's, it has made a major contribution to our national history for over 160 years, and is an essential component of the New Zealand economy.

The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (Inc.) is a body for the advancement of the profession of surveying, dedicated to the service of its members and society by:

  • Representing the public interest;
  • Promoting ethical professional conduct amongst its members;
  • Advocating standards for surveying education; and
  • Raising public awareness of the knowledge, skills, importance and experience of surveyors.

What will you gain by belonging to the NZIS?

You may recognise yourself in one of these groups:

  • As a student, you may be seeking information about your career options, contacts in the profession, additional educational opportunities and work experience.
  • As a new graduate or newcomer to New Zealand, you may be looking for a job, a peer network, support while you complete your licensing procedures, continuing education and/or career guidance.
  • As a mid-career professional, you may want further challenges, continuing education opportunities, recognition for outstanding work, overseas connections, other job opportunities and professional support.
  • As a consultant or team leader, you may be seeking networking opportunities with other senior surveyors, business ideas, or a source of qualified staff. In addition, you may welcome the opportunity to access professional indemnity insurance cover through the Institute.

Above all, as a surveyor in New Zealand and a member of NZIS you will have committed to a high level of ethical and professional standards, you will expect your profession to be well recognised and your talents as a lead professional to be widely sought after.

The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors provides opportunities for achieving each and all of these diverse needs.

Membership of the Institute provides many benefits:

  • A sign of high professional and ethical standards

Membership of the Institute is the only formal sign to the public that a surveyor is subject to a strict code of ethics, very high professional standards and a rigorous disciplinary process.

  • A strong 'up-to-date' and highly professional public image for member surveyors

The Institute is becoming increasingly involved in activities that demonstrate its members' integrity, reliability and accuracy in all aspects of their work - land development, hydrography, cadastral and others.

  • Access to a wealth of knowledge and experience

The Institute has always fostered a strong network of mentoring and support among members, providing a common ground for professional, business and personal development and a culture of sharing, despite a relatively competitive commercial environment.

The Institute provides educational and knowledge-sharing opportunities for its members, through local branch meetings, conferences, seminars and continuing professional development opportunities. Future plans include increasing the number of ways that members can update their awareness and understanding of international trends, legal changes, technology developments and business management.
