Geodesy is the science of measurement and representation of the Earth including its gravitational field.  Geodesy provides the coordinate reference systems and datums that surveyors (and others) rely on for recording spatial information. 

 

GPS and other navigation systems rely heavily on geodesy to provide accurate positions.
