Introducing the NZIS President

Mark Dyer of Rotorua was elected President Elect of NZIS in October 2008.  He takes up the role of President in October 2009.

After leaving Putaruru High School with University Entrance obtained with the assistance of log books, slide rules, compasses and protractors, together with and an interest in geography, he studied architectural draughting and then business at Waikato Technical Institute.

Mark begun his surveying career in 1982 when he joined the Royal NZ Navy as a hydrographic surveyor.  He was involved in charting Doubtful Sound, Bluff Harbour, Cook Strait, the Kermadec Trench, Funafuti lagoon in Tuvalu, and the Tongan Sea Mounts amongst others, fulfilling a dream of joining the navy held since his childhood times living in Lautoka, Fiji.  

In 1986 he took up employment with Harrison Grierson in Rotorua.  He was sponsored by that firm to attend the University of Otago and joined the Institute as it was preparing for its centenary.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Surveying awarded with Credit in 1990.  During that time his interest in human settlement and sustainable development was stimulated.  He returned to Harrison Grierson in Auckland with roles in both planning and surveying, as he studied towards his professional examinations and obtained wide and varied experience as a land surveyor.

In 1994 he passed his professional examinations, received his Competency Certificate, Registered as a Surveyor, and gained full membership of NZIS.

After a brief OE Mark returned to Harrison Grierson in Rotorua, with responsibilties for the Tokoroa office.  During this period he was undertook surveys for large infrastructure projects as well as a wide range of typical general practice surveys.  As an actively involved member of the Rotorua/Bay of Plenty Branch, he served in various roles including Branch Chairman.

He was awarded the NZIS Town Planning Bursary in 1995 and enrolled in Waikato University graduating with a post-graduate diploma in resources and environmental planning.  He is a recognised planning professional.

In 1995 he joined Canmap Consultants, now Canmap Hawley, where he is Managing Director.  He is member of the Consulting Surveyors Division of NZIS.  Mark holds the distinction of Registered Professional Surveyor.

Mark was elected to the Council of NZIS in 2004 where he took on responsibility for the Continuing Professional Development Committee and served on Boards of Enquiry.
