To be a surveyor in New Zealand requires an understanding of the law relating to cadastral surveys. A pass in the Cadastral Law Examination is a pre-requisite to the Professional Examination and is the first step towards becoming a Licensed Cadastral Surveyor.

Survey and Spatial New Zealand conducts the Cadastral Law Exam by arrangement with the Cadastral Surveyors Licensing Board to test the candidate's competency in identifying and applying relevant law as they conduct a cadastral survey. These surveys must be conducted in accordance with the Rules, standards and guidelines set by the Surveyor-General, LINZ and the legislative requirements for the subdivision of land as relevant to cadastral surveying.

To be eligible to sit the Cadastral Law Exam, applicants must hold an approved degree in surveying (e.g BSurv Otago) and have had not less than 10 months post-graduation practical experience in land title in New Zealand at the time applications close.
